Inconvenient Amnesia

“Why did you really bring me here?” Nix asked calmly. That fierce scene felt a million years and a hot opium dream ago. He was seated, leaning forwards on a worn leather couch, some seventies souvenir in this unpretentious, businesslike room, his body throbbing, satiated.

Roark had untied him efficiently, gone into the small adjoining bathroom, cleaned up, come out and thrown Nix a damp washcloth. He’d used it, somehow pulling himself together and gone into the bathroom to use the mirror.

Roark had been a little messy. There was blood on the collar of that new shirt.

Messy, or a reminder to the others of ownership?

But he didn’t truly own Nix. Nor had he owned Nikolai. Claimed, yes. Consort, yes. But whatever games they’d played when they fucked, they’d been equals. And something bad had happened. Something that had torn them apart. Left Nix with a sense of betrayal he could feel even now, although he shoved it down. But didn’t even know where it came from.

But Nikolai had retaliated. And Henley had played a part in that retaliation.

And left for many decades without his lover, his consort, Roark had come close to the living death of the revenant, the living death all bonded vampires came to without their soulmates.

Nikolai must have known that would be the result of his death. Punished his lover with it.

Sweet Jesus.

And yet Roark still stood in danger of becoming a revenant. Always would, until Nix agreed to be turned. Become a vampire. Because if he died, fragile mortal flesh that he was, it was over. And technically, he’d already died twice. The Claiming was simply part of the process. It also marked him as Roark’s to other vampires.

But the male was still so vulnerable.

And yet Roark had not pressured him for that final step. And Nix knew he would not.

He glanced up to see Roark leaning back against the desk, arms crossed, clothing immaculate.

His glowing violet eyes moved over Nix’s body, the leather jacket tossed aside for the moment, Nix’s forearms resting on his knees.

“I brought you here because I want you to remember. I haven’t been enough.” Roark paused, glanced away. “That prick Henley … began some real flicker of memory within you. Reuniting you both to complete that process is not a practical solution,” he said dryly. “But I still had hope – I hoped you would remember. Not this place, I didn’t own it then, but Lucrezia... I was certain she would jolt your memory.”

“Why?”

“Because Lucrezia and Nikolai had history.” Roark shook his head and shot a wicked glance to Nix, suddenly laughed. “And because she’s pretty damned unforgettable.”

Nix laughed too, abruptly loving how Roark looked when he gave himself over to that wry, genuine laughter. Still, it wasn’t enough to drain the returning tension out of him. That scene, before they’d fucked…

Hell, there was history between them, one way or another. Cruel history.

He nodded and smiled. “Uh huh. Memorable Lucrezia certainly is.” He ran a hand through his hair, suddenly exhausted, pushing aside emotion, very aware of the grim tasks ahead.
